Approach

Patient, encouraging, and honest about what it is.

Dialect is a language practice partner. It is not a certified course, an exam, or accredited instruction, and it is not a substitute for a teacher when you need one. Here is exactly what that means in practice.

What Dialect is

Useful, honest, and clear about what it is not.

These are not fine-print disclaimers. They shape every conversation, every practice report, and the way your language partner responds.

Speaking is the practice.

The most effective way to get better at speaking a language is to speak it. Dialect puts you in real conversations at your level and keeps you there. No reading exercises, no grammar drills as a warmup. You open your mouth and go.

One correction at a time.

When you make a mistake, your partner gently notes one thing and moves on. We never pile on. You leave every conversation with something specific to work on, not a list long enough to make you want to stop.

What went well, first.

Before any correction, your partner tells you what you got right. Progress is always visible. You leave every conversation knowing you moved forward, even when it felt hard.

Your voice, your control.

Your voice is processed only to run your conversation. Recordings are off by default. You choose whether to save them, and you can export or delete everything from Settings at any time.

When you feel stuck

Embarrassment is part of learning. We treat it that way.

Feeling nervous about speaking a new language is not a personality flaw. It is part of the process. Everyone goes blank, stumbles over a word, or says something that comes out completely wrong. Your partner has seen it all and reacts the same way every time: calmly, encouragingly, and ready to keep going.

You can repeat a word as many times as you need. You can ask your partner to slow down or start again from the top. You can pause, take a breath, and come back. There is no timer and no reaction. The conversation continues at your pace.

The practice report always shows what went well before it notes anything to work on. Progress is visible in every conversation, even when it felt hard. That is intentional.

Example practice note

“You used the past tense correctly in all three sentences, which was the focus from your last conversation. Your word order in the second sentence was off, but you self-corrected before finishing, which is exactly what to aim for. One thing to try next: when you pause to think, try filler phrases in the language instead of defaulting to English.”

A practice note focuses on your language. It never judges your ideas, your story, or your confidence.

Your voice and data

Plain answers to the questions people ask most.

Is my voice sent to Dialect?

Your speech is turned into text in your browser, and only that text reaches Dialect, to run the conversation. We do not record or store your raw audio, and nothing you say is used to train any public AI model. You can type instead of speaking, and export or delete everything anytime.

What stays in Dialect after a conversation?

Your account, conversation records, and transcripts. Voice recordings are off by default. You can export everything or delete your account and all your data at any time from Settings.
