When you imagine a conversation in your head, you already know what you want to say and the other person cooperates perfectly. Then a real moment arrives and the words come out wrong, or do not come out at all. Practicing in your head is not enough. You need to actually open your mouth.
The solution is obvious and has always been obvious: practice speaking the language, with a patient partner who answers back. The problem was that kind of practice was hard to get. A tutor is expensive and hard to schedule. A language exchange partner might judge you. Modern voice AI changes the equation entirely. That is what Dialect is built on.

Nora had spent years teaching adults to speak a second language and kept seeing the same thing: people learned thousands of words and still froze when a real conversation started. Daniel had spent a decade teaching software to listen to accented, imperfect speech. They built Dialect because nobody else had.
Dialect is an AI-native way to actually learn to speak a language. People have a real spoken conversation with a patient AI partner at their level: the partner speaks naturally in the language they are learning, understands their replies even with an accent or mistakes, corrects them gently as they go, and afterward gives them the two or three things to practice next. It is the speaking practice a class rarely provides, ready whenever the learner is. A real, adaptive spoken conversation with gentle correction is only possible with modern language and voice models, so AI is the whole product. Dialect is a language practice partner, not a certified course, exam, or accredited instruction.
They started Dialect in 2023 in New York, NY. Pre-Seed funding from Verb Ventures and angel investors Priya Menon and Tomás Herrera let them build full time. The team is now 12 people, all working on AI because they believe this is the right moment to make real speaking practice genuinely accessible.
