The first ten minutes: how to start speaking a new language today

Nora CastellanoJune 2, 20264 min read

People wait far too long to start speaking. They tell themselves they will talk once they know enough. But the fastest way to know enough is to start talking now, with very little, and let the conversation teach you the rest.

A starter toolkit

  • A greeting and your name: hello, I am, nice to meet you.
  • Three honest answers: I am well, I am learning, I do not understand.
  • Two rescue phrases: how do you say, and can you repeat that.
  • One curiosity: and you? which hands the turn back and keeps things going.

That is enough for a real exchange. When you get stuck, you say the rescue phrase, your partner rephrases, and you try again. Every one of those small repairs is practice, and it sticks better than anything you memorize in silence.

Let mistakes be part of it

You will get the ending wrong, mix up a word, mangle a sound. Good. A gentle correction in the middle of a real conversation is worth ten flashcards, because it lands on a sentence you actually meant. The goal of your first ten minutes is not to be correct. It is to keep the conversation alive and enjoy it.

Say it in the language you are learning.

Have a real spoken conversation with a patient AI partner who speaks naturally, corrects gently, and tells you exactly what to practice next. One short conversation every day, free.
